A team doesn’t go from 1–4 to bowl champions by accident. We’re joined by Arkansas State head coach Butch Jones and explosive receiver Chauncey Cobb to talk about what actually changes when a program turns the corner and how “momentum” becomes an expectation. Coach Jones explains why every season has its own identity, why Team 112 matters, and how spring football is where leadership is built, not borrowed.
Chauncey gets specific about connection and brotherhood: being pushed through hard situations, learning to trust each other, and showing up for teammates beyond the facility. We dig into what a player-led team really means, and how coaches can be “coach-fed” while still giving players room to be themselves. Coach Jones shares the Fourth And One year-round curriculum focused on choices, leadership skills, and personal branding, which feels tailor-made for the transfer portal era.
Then we lay out the Red Wolves team DNA in plain language: toughness (mental, physical, emotional), connection, resiliency, and composure, plus the “juice and energy” that keeps standards from slipping. Coach also connects culture to stability, development, and an NFL pathway, explaining what the Arkansas State football brand is designed to produce on the field and in life. We wrap with what’s next, including the April 25 spring game and why the community piece matters.

Owner Mindset: How Coach Butch Jones is Building "Team 112" Through Player-Led Culture
After a historic turnaround last season, the Arkansas State Red Wolves aren’t just looking to maintain momentum; they’re looking to redefine what it means to be a modern college football program.
In a recent sit-down, Head Coach Butch Jones and standout wide receiver Chauncy Cobb pulled back the curtain on the "Red Wolf Way." From a 1-4 start to becoming one of only 15 programs in the nation with back-to-back bowl victories, the wins on the field are a direct byproduct of the culture built in the locker room.
From Coach-Fed to Player-Led
One of the most significant shifts in the program has been the transition from a coaching staff that dictates every move to a roster that takes total ownership.
Coach Jones explains that while he provides the "curriculum," including the unique Fourth and One Program that focuses on personal branding and leadership, the players must be the ones to enforce the standards.
The Four Pillars of the Red Wolf DNA
Coach Jones credits the program’s resiliency to a specific four-part DNA that serves as the foundation for every player:
- Toughness: Measured in three dimensions – mental, physical, and emotional.
- Connectivity: Building a brotherhood that survives the "transfer portal era."
- Resiliency: The ability to compete play-in and play-out, regardless of the scoreboard.
- Composure: Handling adversity with a steady hand.
This DNA was put to the ultimate test last year. After a dismal start to the season, the team stayed connected, eventually winning six of their last eight games.
Beyond the Turf: The Development Pipeline
For Jones, the definition of coaching is simple: creating change. Whether a player is heading to the boardroom or the NFL, the goal is for them to leave Jonesboro better than they arrived.
The Red Wolf Brand is gaining serious traction at the professional level. Last year, the program sent four players to NFL organizations, including Mikai Butler, who reached the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots.
A Community Bond
Cobb shares stories of teammates coming over just to nap on a couch or helping each other with late-night study sessions. This organic bond extends to the Jonesboro community and the university’s administration.
As the team prepares for Team 112 (the 112th season of Arkansas State football), the excitement is palpable. With the Spring Game approaching on April 25th, Jones sees it as more than just a scrimmage, but as the community coming together.
