A blizzard couldn’t stop more than 600 people from showing up to Catalyst Northeast Arkansas, and that tells you something important: Northeast Arkansas is hungry for a bigger story about growth, jobs, and what’s possible next. From Arkansas State University’s new recording studio, we talk with Heather Nelson, Vice Chancellor for External Affairs and Strategic Initiatives, about how momentum like that gets created and how it gets sustained.
Heather shares the behind-the-scenes origin story, starting with a long lunch conversation with Chancellor Shields that quickly became a mission to improve strategic storytelling and external communications for A-State. We dig into why the region is “at the precipice” of real change, why the headlines can’t just be about steel, and how the university can serve as the connector for industry, talent, and opportunity across Northeast Arkansas.
We also get practical about format. Events generate a rush, but time limits cut conversations short. A long-form podcast expands the room, bringing back leaders from panels like infrastructure so we can drill down, follow the threads, and make the information usable for students, alumni, employers, and anyone watching Arkansas economic development. Heather puts it plainly: information is power, and when people hear a clear vision, they become ambassadors for it.

More About this Episode
The A-State Advantage: Capturing the Magic of Regional Growth
The Arkansas State University Media Network has officially opened its doors, launching a new era of storytelling from its state of the art studios in the Student Union.
In a debut session, host Parker Dodson sat down with Heather Nelson, Vice Chancellor for External Affairs and Strategic Initiatives, to discuss her upcoming podcast, The A-State Advantage.
Their conversation highlighted the momentum of Northeast Arkansas and the university’s pivotal role in the region’s economic and workforce development.
A Vision Sparked by Conversation
Nelson’s journey with Arkansas State began organically during a ninety minute lunch with Chancellor Todd Shields nearly two years ago. Nelson, who has known the Chancellor for over three decades, recalled being struck by the sheer volume of amazing things happening on campus that the rest of the state had yet to fully realize.
This realization led Nelson to join the university to help shape external communications and storytelling. Her efforts culminated in the Catalyst Northeast Arkansas event in January 2025.
Despite an ice storm and a blizzard, over 600 people attended the workforce development summit, signaling a deep regional hunger for a unified economic vision.
Putting Magic in a Bottle
While the Catalyst events provided a high energy spark, Nelson’s goal for The A-State Advantage is to sustain that momentum year round. In a traditional panel format, speakers are often limited to short segments.
Nelson intends to use the podcast to put magic in a bottle by taking those same experts and diving much deeper.
Information is power, Nelson noted. It is not that amazing things aren’t happening on this campus and in this region every day. It is just that we have got to find the mechanisms with which to broadcast out those stories.
By moving beyond the time constraints of a live stage, the show will offer in depth discussions on why industries are building, relocating, and growing in Northeast Arkansas and specifically how A-State is fueling that progress.
Infrastructure, Vision, and the Next Generation
Nelson reflected on a recent infrastructure panel featuring leaders from Rdot, Garver, and Entergy Arkansas. While the live event touched on broad themes, the podcast will allow for drilling down into specific, relevant topics that affect the daily lives of Arkansans.
The impact of this high level storytelling was recently felt in a leadership lecture series Nelson teaches on campus. After hearing a vision for the region’s future, students expressed that they had never before heard Northeast Arkansas described as a place of such immense possibility for their adult lives and their future families.
Long Form Conversations for a New Era
The shift in how people receive information has made the podcasting format an essential tool for the university.
The A-State Advantage is designed to be:
- Educational: Offering deep dives into complex regional issues.
- Informational: Providing relevant data on workforce and industry trends.
- Visionary: Showing students and residents a path forward that spans generations.
For Parker Dodson and Heather Nelson, the studio is simply a place to record the vital conversations that are already happening behind the scenes.
As the university continues to expand its footprint with new veterinary and leadership facilities, The A-State Advantage will serve as the primary source for understanding how Arkansas State is serving as the catalyst for the region's future.
